If you only look at ten

InstaDeep for proof African AI exits at scale. DataProphet for world-class industrial ML. Aerobotics for agritech that exports. JUMO for AI banking infrastructure at $400m valuation. Lelapa AI for building language models Silicon Valley will not. Cue for AI agents already answering 500 million conversations. Cerebrium for infrastructure good enough that Google's fund led the round. iiDENTIFii for biometrics the big banks trust. AURA for taking SA security tech to the US. Zindi for the 85,000 data scientists behind everything else.

The corporates are further along than you think

The startup list is half the story. Around 45% of South African banks have each allocated more than R30 million for AI in 2026. Capitec's AI-led fraud re-engineering cut fraud by roughly 20%, and its Pulse tool reads a customer's activity in about ten seconds on inbound calls. FNB runs natural-language agents for loan adjudication in isiZulu and isiXhosa.

The telcos moved too. Vodacom signed a multi-year Google Cloud collaboration in November 2025 to push Gemini-powered services across its African markets. MTN launched a group-wide responsible AI strategy and plans to turn its tower network into a distributed AI inference grid. Even your groceries: Shoprite's Pixie shopping assistant inside Sixty60 was called a massive hit within weeks of launch in 2026.

If you want the full adoption picture with sources, it lives on our State of AI in South Africa page.

How this list was built

Three rules. One, the company is South African-founded, South African-headquartered, or runs a major research and engineering operation here. Two, it ships actual machine learning or AI in production, not "AI-powered" marketing copy. Three, every funding figure traces to a primary announcement or credible tech press, and where we could not verify something, we left it out rather than guessing.

We review the list quarterly. If we missed you, or you raised a round we should know about, tell us. Inclusion is free and stays free.

Questions people actually ask

How many AI companies are there in South Africa?

This directory tracks 41 notable AI companies in South Africa as of August 2026. Independent counts vary by definition: TechCabal's 2026 census counted 49 SA AI startups, Tracxn lists 53, and DLA Piper notes South Africa hosts the largest number of AI organisations on the continent. The honest answer is 40 to 55 depending on how strictly you define "AI company".

What is the biggest AI company in South Africa?

By exit value, InstaDeep: acquired by BioNTech for around $680 million in 2023, with Cape Town as a core research hub. By valuation among active local companies, JUMO was valued around $400 million at its 2021 raise. By enterprise footprint, Sand Technologies and the big consultancies deploy the most AI engineers.

Where are most South African AI companies based?

Cape Town leads this directory with roughly half the companies, Johannesburg and Pretoria hold most of the rest, and the Stellenbosch to Somerset West belt punches far above its weight thanks to the university pipeline. Gauteng dominates the AI jobs market though: Pnet data shows 58% of AI roles are based there.

Which is the best AI development company in South Africa?

Depends what you are buying. For manufacturing optimisation, DataProphet. For African-language AI, Lelapa or Botlhale. For enterprise data science at scale, Sand Technologies or Spatialedge. If you want a custom AI platform designed, built and shipped in 3 to 6 months, that is exactly what we do at Auxo Digital. We would say that, but our past work says it better.

How much funding have South African AI startups raised?

Around $150.4 million in cumulative disclosed funding across 31 tracked startups by June 2025, per StartupList Africa. That excludes the InstaDeep acquisition and corporate AI spend. Notable rounds: JUMO $120m, Lula $35m, Pineapple $21.3m, Aerobotics and Naked $17m each, iiDENTIFii and AURA $15m each.

What does it cost to build AI in South Africa?

A working AI chatbot or automation starts around R80,000 to R250,000. A custom ML product typically runs R500,000 to R1.5 million. A full AI platform runs R1.5 million to R5 million plus. We published the full breakdown, with a calculator, in our AI development cost guide.
