What Johannesburg's AI scene is actually good at
Cape Town has more AI startups. Johannesburg has the head offices, and the head offices have the budgets. The list above reads accordingly.
Money and risk. Naked and Pineapple run insurance with AI doing the grunt work, from quoting off a photo to handling claims in a chat. AURA dispatches the nearest armed responder or medic and is taking that model to the US. Synthesis builds cloud, data and AI systems for banks, owned by JSE-listed Capital Appreciation. When the buyer is a bank or an insurer, the supplier is often in Sandton or Rosebank.
African languages. Lelapa AI built InkubaLM, a small open language model covering isiZulu, isiXhosa, Swahili, Yoruba and Hausa, plus the Vulavula speech and NLP API. Botlhale AI, a UCT spinout, does speech recognition and text-to-speech in African languages for call centres. If your customers do not all speak English, these are the two names to know.
Health and operations. Envisionit Deep AI's RADIFY suite reads and triages X-rays. Isazi applies optimisation to forecasting, routing and healthcare logistics. Xineoh predicts what retail customers will buy and when. Teraflow.ai does the ML engineering and data ops that decide whether a model actually ships, for telcos and banks, from Johannesburg and London.

Up the N1 in Tshwane, 2 more companies make the list. hearX Group is a University of Pretoria spinout doing AI-driven hearing health. LARCAI in Centurion does computer vision and intelligent automation. Not enough yet for a Pretoria page of its own, so they live here.
| Company | City | Category | Founded | Disclosed funding |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| hearX Group | Pretoria | Healthtech AI | 2015 | Series A; US arm (LXE Hearing) in orderly wind-down through Sept 2026 |

How this list was built
This page is a cut of the full South African directory, generated from the same dataset every time the site builds. The rules are the same: the company ships real AI in production, it is founded or headquartered here or runs a major engineering operation here, and every funding figure traces to a primary announcement or credible tech press. No one paid to be listed and no one can.

Questions people actually ask
How many AI companies are there in Johannesburg?
Our tracker lists 11 AI companies in Johannesburg as of 27 September 2026, plus 2 in Pretoria and Centurion. We only count companies shipping AI in production, so broader directories that include every agency with "AI" on the homepage will show bigger numbers.
Is Johannesburg or Cape Town better for AI?
Depends what you are counting. Cape Town has more AI companies in our tracker: 18 against Johannesburg's 11. Johannesburg sits in the province with the jobs: Pnet data shows 58% of South African AI job ads are in Gauteng. Startups cluster where founders want to live. Enterprise AI budgets cluster where the banks and insurers keep their head offices.
Which Johannesburg companies build AI for African languages?
Lelapa AI, which built the InkubaLM small language model and the Vulavula speech and NLP API, and Botlhale AI, which does speech recognition and text-to-speech in African languages for call centres. Both are in the table above with links to their own sites.
Where does AI research happen in Johannesburg?
The Wits MIND Institute is the anchor. It launched in November 2024 under Prof Benjamin Rosman and received US$1 million in core funding from Google.org in September 2025. Wits also runs the Tshimologong digital innovation precinct in Braamfontein, opened in 2016.
How do I choose an AI development company in Johannesburg?
Score them on the same criteria: POPIA posture, delivery evidence, who actually does the work, IP ownership, pricing model, running costs, lock-in and references.
